the maltese islands

luzzu.jpgAlthough Malta has a long chequered history, three eras in particular played a major role in moulding the present-day culture of the islands.

The Arab occupation, from 870 to 1090, provided the basis for the Maltese language. The Order of St John, who occupied the islands from 1530 to 1798, shaped the islands artistically, architecturally, commercially, socially and culturally.

The British period, from 1801 to 1964, introduced the concept of British justice with unified code of laws, democracy and administration. The British also helped launch the islands into the modern industrial world and linked the islands with the worldwide community of English speaking countries.

Malta has been called an open-air museum, and rightly so. For a small country the Maltese islands are richly endowed with archaeological sites, historical monuments, magnificent churches, opulent palaces and museums.

Moreover, in recent years new attractions have also been opened to the public including multi-vision shows and theme presentation.

The hospitality of the Maltese people is world-renowned. Most people speak English and Italian fluently, while French and German are fairly spoken. Interpreters, translators and guides proficient in other languages are readily available.
